I'm a grad student at Georgia State University in Atlanta, and I feel your pain. We have office space at Tech Research, and everytime I go there I'm painfully reminded that I come from the ghetto.

We use google groups, google docs, google spaces, and we're building our own clusters out of obsolete equipment so that we can do a better job using the supercomputers we share time on.

The problem with any MS solution, as opposed to a google/free/open source one, is the even if MS will help you (which they probably will) there is still the next collaborator, and the next, and the next. Every small school is going to need an advocate to get your level of technology going.

There is no reason your students shouldn't know how to use computers... hardware is dirt cheap and all the really useful productivity software is either free... or you could collaborate with a CS department, tell them what you need, and make the tool so that we can all distribute it for free.

In other words, the solution to the problem might not be collaboration with a large company that makes software, it might be collaboration with a small CS department that can build software.

Given your experience in media and the level of effort you put into "educating beyond the institution", you would seem a natural fit for an organization that sometimes struggles with public perception.

Pitch that, maybe they'll listen.

Hi Pamela - so poignantly put & a sobdering reality on what's happening acros the so-called developed world.

Maybe Barak could divert more defence spending to education?!! Easy to say I guess! All the best with persuading MS. You've got the enthusiasm as well as the eloquence & experience so I hope they listen.

Best regards,

Dez.
