Second Life Silliness

pamelagondwana.pngI’m just posting a quick post this evening as I try and recover from yesterdays chaos. As some of you read, I’ve been attempting to play in Second Life. After much help from Anthony Crider of Elon University, I don’t feel as lost or confused or ugly (that’s my avatar πŸ™‚ ), but I still do a fair amount of bashing into walls and falling out of the sky as I try to get around. There is also other silliness inherent in wearing a virtual body.

With these personal experiences under my belt, I was reading through blogs today and came across this youtube on Pharyngula that made me giggle. Enjoy πŸ™‚

  1. Sometime ago you wrote something about second life, being the Nth! time I have heard about it on the net, I decided to give it a try… perhaps I had higher expectations (as in the greatest chatroom in the world, perhaps?), perhaps I have not yet caugh the swing of it, but it has proven a bit of a disappointment so far… all I find in there is lots of people who want me to buy something for my avatar or else a lot of 13 yo kids (or so it seems)writting scripts that blast you off your current position and leave you half dizzy and certainly lost for explanations, SF is not an upgrade for the old IRC chat servers (undernet, Dalnet..etc) Its a huge marketing machinery trying to get you to flash the credit card…sigh…
Its a shame, if you take the economic value off it, perhaps the building blocks for a greater world community could at last be put on solid ground, or should I say “Virtual” Ground?

  2. Very funny spoof on SL. πŸ™‚

SL should not be underestimated in its education potential. The freedom to learn with less social pressures, and the creative spirit throughout encourages involvement which will enhance the learning experience.

Visit the ISM (International Space Museum)and the adjacent JPL, CoLab, and other science islands for some amazing creations in virutal full-scale modeling.

  3. lol, i am on second life as well, if you need some help. IT’S FABULOUS once you get beyond the learning curve! feel free to IM me when you understand what that means! πŸ™‚
